The one engine1946, shortly after the end of World War II, Yonex began as Yoneyama Company, Ltd, founded by Minoru Yoneyama, a manufacturer of wooden floats for fishing nets. Yoneyama's wooden business grew rapidly until modern developments - particularly plastic floats - put the company out of business. Frustrated at being displaced by advancing technology, he vowed never to be left behind technologically and committed to constant innovation in future ventures.
The manufacture of wooden racketsBuilding on its strengths in woodworking, the Yoneyama company began manufacturing badminton rackets in 1957 as the original equipment supplier for the Sanbata racket brand. Today, Yonex manufactures its own tennis rackets, golf clubs, snowboards, racing bikes, tennis and badminton strings and much more. Over the years, Yonex has learned that "the most difficult situations create the greatest opportunities" - and this spirit continues in its mission to enrich the world with sports through high-quality products.
The first Yoneyama racket With the bankruptcy of Sanbata in 1961 and the burning of Yoneyama's production headquarters in 1963, the 1960s became a real test of the spirit of creating opportunities in difficult situations. Despite these setbacks, Yoneyama established Yoneyama Sports Co, Ltd. to manufacture Yoneyama-branded rackets, rebuilt the factory in three days, and expanded into the United States and Europe during this pivotal decade.
In 1965, the factory in Tokyo opened its doors for the production of shuttlecocks - today Yonex is the official tournament racket of all major events of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as well as the Olympic Games since 1992 in Barcelona. In 1969, Yonex expanded into the tennis industry with the T-7000 aluminium racket.
Pushing structural boundaries To improve the widely popular T-7000, Yonex developed the Oval Pressed Shaft (OPS), which allowed for a stronger, more stable racket and was used in the T-7500.
In 1973, the "YY Yoneyama" logo is introduced and eight-time (seven times in a row) All England Open badminton champion and badminton icon Rudy Hartono starts playing with Yonex. The following year, Yonex began manufacturing wooden tennis rackets and signed Tony Roche, the fourteen-time Australian champion. In 1978, the B-8500 and the CARBONEX 8 were the first badminton rackets with a weight of less than 100 g to appear on the market.
Yonex's iconic square ISOMETRIC™ racket was first introduced in 1980 with the launch of the R-1, R-2 and R-3. That same year, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova began playing with Yonex.
In 1983, Navratilova won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open in both singles and doubles with the best-selling R-22 racket.
In 1984, Yonex becomes the title sponsor of the sport's oldest and most prestigious tournament, the All England Open Badminton Championships.
In 1989, Yonex introduces the ADX 200 in the United States, the wide-body graphite driver that changes the game of golf. The ADX 200 entered the Guinness Book of Records with the longest drive of 412 yards.
In 1990, Navratilova won her 9th Wimbledon title with the wide RQ-180, and in 1991 Monica Seles became the youngest player to become a world number one. Based on the square tennis racket frame typical of Yonex, the first ISOMETRIC™ badminton racket in history was introduced in 1992. In 1995, Yonex began manufacturing snowboards to further push the boundaries of graphite innovation. In 1996, Martina Hingis became the youngest major champion in history at the age of 15 and continued her legendary career with Yonex equipment. In 1998, Yonex changed its logo to the current YY Yonex logo. In 1999, Yonex begins hosting the YONEX Ladies Open, an event of the LPGA Japan Tour (Ladies Professional Golfers' Association of Japan) at the Yonex Country Club.
Breaking records In the early 2000s, Lleyton Hewitt became the youngest male world No. 1 in history, winning two major singles titles: Wimbledon and the US Open.
In 2007, Ryo Aono became the first Japanese snowboarder to win a gold medal at the Snowboard World Cup in the halfpipe. During his career he has won 12 World Cup titles and competed in two Olympic Games.
